A Letter from the President

2027  |  ARDA's 121st Year

Dear ARDA Members, Sponsors, and Supporters,

A Word About the Year Behind Us

Cameron Rex did far more than steward ARDA through its 120th anniversary. He made lasting structural changes to how this organization operates that will still be paying off long after most of us have forgotten who put them in place, which is, honestly, the best kind of leadership there is. Cameron, thank you. You handed off an organization in better shape than you found it, and that is a high bar for the rest of us.

Now to the year ahead. ARDA enters its 121st year. Across those years the rail industry has absorbed one new technology after another, and ARDA's role has never been to chase them—it has been to give practitioners a place to compare notes before deciding what matters. That is the spirit behind this year's theme:

Interlocking Value: Connecting ARDA to AI

An interlocking exists to route traffic safely between separate lines. Each of us arrives at artificial intelligence on our own terms and at our own pace—some already using it daily, some skeptical, some not at all. The connection I care about this year is the one between members inside each section: someone tries something in their own work, mentions it on the next call, and a colleague facing the same problem takes it back to their desk. That is where the value shows up.

To be clear about what this is not: AI is not intended to take over section calls. I have asked each Section leader to include a brief AI moment at each meeting that is relevant to their own discipline, nothing more. If a topic earns your interest, feel free to go deeper. If it does not, feel free to move on. Skepticism is welcome here, and hard questions are more useful to this organization than easy enthusiasm.

What I am asking for is simple. Share what you have tried, what you have seen at other conferences, and especially what has not worked. The failures teach faster than the wins, and no single section can generate that experience alone.

My thanks as well to our Board and Section leaders, to Ashley and Claudia, and to the sponsors who make all of this possible. Please renew your membership and consider our sponsorship pledge for the coming year.

I look forward to seeing you at both of this year's events:
